當地時間2014年8月14日，德國Icon Genetics公司從一種名為本氏煙（nicotiana benthamiana）植物的葉子上提取蛋白和酶，這些蛋白和酶將用于生產ZMapp藥物的抗體，這種藥物或許會對埃博拉病毒產生作用。Icon Genetics構建了一個系統，將編碼修飾后抗體的基因導入這種煙草的葉片當中。隨后，葉片會產生預期的單克隆“植物抗體”蛋白。只需要一周時間，人們就可以大量收獲葉片，并提取和純化蛋白。
